NVIDIA Tegra 4i update adds LTE-Advanced speeds

NVIDIA’s mobile processor for mainstream smartphones – Tegra 4i, which includes an integrated NVIDIA i500 LTE modem, chewed through 150Mbps of LTE data in a demo this week at CTIA 2013 in Las Vegas.

First shown at Mobile World Congress in February at Cat 3 100mbps, this Tegra 4i demo is fully based on a software update – no new hardware, no new processor. This showcases the adaptability and flexibility of NVIDIA’s software-defined radio technology.

Speed to Burn: Tegra 4i chewed through 150 Mbps of data in a demo at CTIA this week.

An additional advantage of the technology is its tiny size. Because the modem is designed with general purpose Deep Execution Processors (DXP), it’s 40 percent the size of a conventional LTE modem. The benefit is a fast, high performance, adaptable modem in a tiny footprint.

Tegra 4i’s modem is also multi-mode. It delivers 4G LTE Advanced and is backward compatible so it can offer LTE Cat 3, 3G, and 2G. That means it will work even where LTE networks aren’t available. Other LTE Advanced features will be coming soon in software.

The CTIA demo used a tester which emulates an LTE Cat 4 network because live local LTE Cat 4 networks don’t exist yet. In this demo Phoenix – the Tegra 4i reference smartphone – is connected to the tester and shows 150 Mbps.

We also demonstrated Phoenix running on a live ATT LTE network – showing video streaming over LTE and voice calls. It’s a great proof point of our strong progress in Tegra 4i modem stability and performance.

U.S. Navy dolphins find antique torpedo

Unlike Acoustic Kitty, the U.S. military’s dolphin program, active since the 1960s, has had quite a bit of success. Dolphins, you see, are capable of producing sonar, and have an aptitude for learning commands, proving to be much more useful than machines for aquatic mine detection.

“Dolphins naturally possess the most sophisticated sonar known to man,” explains Braden Duryee, operations supervisor for the SSC Pacific Biosciences Division. “They can detect mines and other potentially dangerous objects on the ocean floor that are acoustically difficult targets to detect.”

This time, though, two of the trained bottle-nose dolphins have discovered something much more interesting than mines off the coast of Coronado, Calif: a late 19th century Howell Automobile Torpedo, the first self-propelled torpedo in the U.S.

Unlike previous torpedoes, it was propelled by a hand-wound flywheel that weighed around 60 kilograms and needed to spin at around 10,000 rotations per minute. Conceived in 1871, the torpedo wasn’t officially approved for construction until 1877, and then used until 1885-1886. It was quickly superseded in 1892, meaning only 50 of the torpedoes were ever produced.

Until this discovery, in fact, only one Howell torpedo was known to still exist, housed in the U.S. Naval Undersea Museum in Keyport, Wash. (Of course, Howell was pipped at the post by Melbourne, Australia, inventor Louis Brennan, who patented his steerable propeller torpedo in 1877.)

The dolphins had been trained by U.S. Navy specialists to touch the front of the boat with their noses if they find something, and the back of the boat if they don’t. During a shallow-water dive last month, a dolphin by the name of Ten surfaced and touched the front of the boat, confusing the human handlers, who didn’t expect any finds in the area. When it happened a week later with a dolphin named Spetz, a marker was placed, and divers were sent in for examination and retrieval. They discovered, after extensive research, that it was a 130-year-old torpedo.

“It was apparent in the first 15 minutes that this was something that was significant and really old,” Christian Harris, operations supervisor for the SSC Pacific Biosciences Division, said. “Realizing that we were the first people to touch it or be around it in over 125 years was really exciting.”

Smart necklace is key to secret iPad diary

Lock down your digital diary.

Dano’s iHeart Locket takes the wearable technology trend and makes it cute. The smart necklace works with the iPad to lock down digital diary entries and keep secret crushes and innermost thoughts safe from prying eyes.

The gold heart necklace, designed with preteens and teens in mind, works with the iHeart Locket Diary App for iOS. The diary app holds text, pictures, speech-to-text audio, and written notes, making it more of a digital scrapbook than a simple journal.

Each locket contains a unique code to keep the diary private, especially from marauding siblings. Push a button on the locket and all those secrets are hidden as if written in disappearing ink. Nobody else needs to know that you’re madly in love with Justin Bieber.

Selling for $24.99, the locket could be seen as a way for parents to encourage their children to journal, while still respecting their kids’ privacy. It’s an interesting digital upgrade to the old method of writing in a blank book, hiding it under the mattress, and hoping for the best.

Sony’s not showing its new PlayStation 4 just yet, but here’s a taste (video)

0514b ps4 Sonys not showing its new PlayStation 4 just yet, but heres a taste (video)

What does the PlayStation 4 look like? We didn’t find out back at Sony’s big New York City reveal gala in February, but it looks like we’re edging ever closer to that moment: June 10th at 6PM PT seems to be exactly when we’ll find out. Hey, wouldn’t you know it, that lines up with Sony’s E3 2013 press conference, which we’ll be liveblogging right here on Engadget. The coincidences simply won’t stop! A new tease video today gives us a few glimpses at what we might see in a few weeks, but for now you’ll have to be sated by looking through individual video frames. Take a look (and then another, and then another) just below the break.

Jolla smartphone lets fly with Sailfish OS

The Jolla phone.

Jolla)

The first phone running Sailfish, the open-source operating system from the people who tried to get MeeGo going, is the Jolla, it’ll cost you 399 euros ($512), and it’s coming by the end of the year.

Jolla — pronounced “yo-la,” not “joller” or “holler” — is the name of the phone and the Finnish company that makes it. It has a 4.5-inch screen, a dual-core chip, 16GB of storage expandable via microSD, 4G, an 8-megapixel camera and a battery you can replace yourself.

Sailfish is “Android app compliant,” which hints you’ll be able to install standard
Android apps on it. Jolla hasn’t explained what this means in practice, but it sounds like you’ll be able to sideload apps from Google Play, and that it’ll be very easy for Android developers to translate their wares to Sailfish.

If you plop down 100 euros ($128) for a pre-order, you’ll help fund the mobile’s production and bag an exclusive “other half.” Jolla doesn’t explain what that means, but from the phone’s split design I’m guessing it’s the removable backplate, like fashion-forward Nokias of old.

Here’s Jolla’s launch video [warning: LOUD]:
